Pilot systems for providing in-vehicle route guidance are under development in several countries, notably AUTOGUIDE in the UK and ALI-SCOUT in West Germany. A vital element of any system is the communication path between roadside beacons and the in-vehicle units. The paper examines the criteria to be considered when selecting the communication technology and defining its parameters. The paper addresses: - the market requirements - the technical implications - the available technologies - the defining parameters and concludes that infrared beacon technology provides the most promising basis for future developments.
