The purpose of the Fault Isolation Expert System II (FIES II) project was to demonstrate that an expert system can quickly detect and isolate faults in a spacecraft power system. To this end, a rule-based expert system was developed. The expert system uses as performance medium, a reconfigurable, hardware simulation (or breadboard) of a spacecraft power system. The fault (an incorrectly opened or closed relay, or a resistive or direct shunt) was introduced to the breadboard. The subsequent performance of the expert system in detecting and isolating the fault was the primary orientation of this project.
