It has been customary to approach automotive electronic circuit design in one of two ways; Analogue or Microprocessor. There is now a third way, namely; Application Specific Intergrated Circuit. In the computer industry ASICs are common. Almost every microprocessor based system will contain ASICs. However in the Automotive industry an ASIC can easily form the basis of a system rather than act as a peripheral to some other device. Examining the three approaches demonstrates that Analogue designs are still very relevant to today's automotive industry. However they are slowly being overshadowed by the more powerful digital techniques. It is not practical to implement complex functions with analogue electronics because of the reliability and testability implications associated with high component counts. If an ASIC is used as a peripheral in a more complex system then certain of these advantages will be eliminated. However, it is still likely that the remaining advantages will outway the disadvantages where a suitable application exists.
