A linear induction motor with U shaped armature was propsed by J. Guimbal. In this motor the inductor is of rectangular cross section and the armature embraces on three sides the inductor, the fourth side being covered by a U shaped aluminium damper shield, which diminishes the magnetic leakage flux. An experimental model for a 1000 HP motor was tested at the Research Institute for transports in France. The better operating characteristics of this motor, higher than those of classical linear motors, made necessary a theoretical study, to allow the constructive optimization. Here a theory is presented for the calculation of the operating characteristics and the computed results are compared with the experimental ones.
