Remotely located oil and gas production facilities have grown in size and complexity. Automatic control systems employed in these facilities utilize today's digital distributed control, process computers, and data telemetry systems. Two actual projects are described in the paper: one onshore oil and gas field in the Middle East, and an offshore complex located in the North Sea. Data telemetry enhances production management of the entire field. Local distributed control systems reduce operating costs and improve efficiency of each individual production facility.
