Icebergs are a major hazard to navigation of Canada's East Coast and in the Eastern Canadian Arctic. The combination of the predominate poor weather conditions and the poor radar reflectivity of icebergs compounds the problem. The need exists to quantify the iceberg detection reliability on marine radars in order to obtain a measure of the risks to marine traffic and offshore platforms. A model has been developed which provides probability of detection and signal strength information as a function of range and orientation with respect to the wind duration for any combination of marine radar system, iceberg size and shape, and sea state condition. A comparison against measured maximum ranges of detection show it to be accurate for both single and multiple pulse detection. When compared with signal strength measurements as a function of range it is also shown to be accurate in the absence of ducting. The model can be used in risk analysis studies, for the assessment of current marine radar installations and for the optimization of future installations.
