Several impressive systems of magnetically-levitating (maglev) trains have been proposed in recent years. Now that research has proven levitation and propulsion to be viable alternatives to conventional rail-oriented technologies, the approaching commercial stage is moving the focus towards the cost-effectiveness of proposed projects. Applying civil engineering to maglev therefore becomes a major determining force in the future of these proposals.
