This paper discusses the essential advantages of the Maglev System resulting from the lack of contact between the vehicle and the guideway and the long-stator linear drive. The most significant characteristic of the system is the high maximum speed of the Maglev train of 400-500 km/h and its resultant effect on traffic, namely the desired shift to tracked transportation. In order to further increase the average speed of the Maglev train, acceleration and braking distances have to be much shorter than those of the wheel-on-rail systems; this is achieved by dimensioning the long-stator linear drive to suit the specific route. These positive characteristics of the Maglev System are corroborated by comparisons of travelling times and speeds of door-to-door transportation by the various transport systems that compete with one another. Evidence that a shift in traffic to the Maglev System can be achieved with markedly better travelling times is provided by the results of studies in Europe and the USA.
