The specifical theoretical progresses in the analysis of electrical rotating machines supplied by means of power electronical apparatus offers now the possibility to use either dc or ac machine for variable speed or for specific purpose electrical drives. We can now, in fact, say that the dc, the asynchronous and the synchronous (brushless) machine are all capable to offer analogous performances when they are supplied by static converters. An important question is then now submitted to the attention of the technicians: what kind of machine has to be properly choosen for the single application and why. The answer to this question is indeed not immediate, because different considerations of different kind have to be taken into account (i.e. price convenience, weight reduction, special features, efficiency, maintenance and so on). From a general point of view it is difficult to give rise to an exhaustive treatment of the matter, because it implies a set of knowledges which can be with difficulty found in a specific working group. For this purpose we tried to give a simple contribution to the solution of the problem concerning the electrical motors. By taking into account the elementary rules of electrical machine design we tried to express in a very simple form the relations between machine torque and machine dimensions. On this basis we compared the dimensions which for the three different kinds of electrical machines, previously considered, give rise to the same output electromechanical torque. In this way we are able to present an overall comparison among the different machines and to state the fields of convenience for each type of machine.
