Avionic capabilities proposed for future fighter aircraft will provide flight crews access to an unprecedented amount of information about internal system functions and about the external environment. Advanced crew station interface designs that optimize the transmission of information will be required to exploit the potential benefits of emerging avionics technologies. One means of improving the efficiency of information transfer is through the use of pictorial display formats. The Boeing Military Airplane Company is currently working under contract to AFWAL/FIGR on the Multi-Crew Pictorial Format Display Evaluation (MCPFDE) program. During the course of this program a wide variety of pictorial formats will be evaluated for use in two-place fighter aircraft. These formats are expected to improve tactical decision making because they promote both internal and external situation awareness by permitting the rapid extraction and use of pertinent task-specific information. This paper describes a suite of color pictorial display formats that were developed to support beyond-visual-range air-to-air combat, the design process that was used to generate the display formats, and specific lessons learned during the display format development process.
