ASD has a Computer Resources Handbook for Flight Critical Systms which places special emphasis on reliability and fault tolerance (RAFT) techniques in aircraft to minimize and cope with the effects of failure. The handbook introduces the reader to the terminology and basic concepts of RAFT techniques, establishes definitions of critical systems and provides a general methodology as well as specific examples for the application of RAFT techniques in the development and operation of a weapon system. The selection of a technique is based in technical factors, prior use, availability of logistics support, or considerations of national policy. Consequently, the evaluation is often presented in terms of acceptable solutions rather than optimal ones. The general principles of economic trade-off procedures are included.
