This paper discusses embedded training functions in radar-oriented airborne Electronic Warfare (EW). Embedded training can generate a realistic simulated radar emitter environment interacting with on-board equipment to provide realistic EW training to pilots during actual training missions. The principles of airborne Electronic Warfare equipment are discussed and a generic embedded training system is described. Major system components and system configuration are described. The On-board Electric Warfare Simulator (OBEWS) is presented as an example of a sophisticated application to be retrofitted into the F-16. The OBEWS training capabilities, system configuration and support facilities are described. OBEWS illustrates several larger issues in embedded training. Several general problems with embedded training systems are discussed.
