Recent advances in aerospace and electronics technology enable significant improvements in air vehicle performance and system reliability at reduced crew workload. An Integrated Vehicle Management System (IVMS) is required to fully exploit these technological advances. This paper addresses the flight guidance and control aspects of an IVMS. An overview of the key functional areas for an IVMS concept and a specific approach to coordinate airplane pitch and thrust control using an energy management technique as discussed. Finally, a discussion of the proposed avionics upgrade to the 'Speckled Trout' C-135C testbed to enable flight evaluation of emerging technology concepts, such as IVMS, is presented.
