This necessarily brief review does not attempt to cover the vast myriad of topics encompassed by the field of underwater acoustics. My rather more modest intention is to describe some of those environmental features which play major roles in determining sound propagation, and to indicate ways in which its effects may be understood. Throughout this talk I will note those themes to be covered in somewhat more detail by the five speakers to follow.
