This paper examines the development of UK traffic signal optics from the late 1960's to the present, and includes an indication of future trends. UK traffic signal optics have been specified in British Standards since 1933. The current addition, BS505: 1971, is under revision. Issue has been delayed to provide definite information on phantom singla levels, also a sub committee of the Commission International de l'Eclairage (CIE) is drafting recommendations for the optical requirements of traffic signals which it is intended to include within the revised BS505.
