For a conventional totally enclosed induction motor of 75 kW an unconventional rotor was built with a centrifugal heat pipe in the shaft. The resulting motor was tested both with operative and inoperative heat pipe. It was fed either by the 50/s system or by a current source inverter at several smaller frequencies. It is demonstrated in this paper that the use of a specially designed heat pipe in the shaft can significantly decrease the temperature level of rotor and stator even at low speeds. It could be shown that the use of a heat pipe in the shaft of a totally enclosed 75 kW motor can effect significant temperature decreases even for low speeds. If this heat pipe is water cooled, the stator cooling could also be improved without much additional expense by water cooling of the housing. Motor cars with water cooling of the motor housing alone have recently been ordered by urban railways in Hamburg.
