The application of a dc circuit breaker, particularly its use on a rapid transit system, is still recognized to be an area where special knowledge is required. This may be because not many technical papers address the subject and not all national standards available cover the specific requirements for a rapid transit system. In this article an attempt is made to discuss some of the criteria used for the application of a dc circuit breaker for a rapid transit system. While this paper is mainly concerned with the rapid transit system, the principles outlined are equally applicable on other dc systems, e.g., mine winders, steel mills, etc.
