A colored Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) instrument cluster has been developed in place of the Vacuum Fluorescent Display (VFD) and the Light Emitting Diode (LED) type. A double layer guest-host (GH) type LCD is used for the display device. And the slow response in cold situations is improved by means of adjustment of the cell gap and adoption of a heated LCD. A cold cathode discharge tube with reflector realizes white, high and uniform brightness. Irregularities in brightness due to changes in the temperature is solved by adjustment of light and installation of a heater. A heat seal connector is chosen for use between the LCD and print circuit board. These clusters were introduced into the Japanese market for the Toyota Corona, a passenger car in 1983.
