A new instrument panel was planned for incorporation into the 1985 Thunderbird and Cougar lines of Ford Motor Company's North American Automotive Operations. In order to comply with the theme of the new instrument panel and, as a result of new packaging parameters, a new instrument cluster was also required. In the 1984 version of these carlines, two instrument clusters were available. The base instrument cluster was a conventional analog electromechanical unit; an optional vacuum fluorescent electronic instrument cluster was also available. Early in the planning stages of the 1985 program, the decision was made to incorporate some electronic instrumentation into the base vehicle. For several reasons, including cost and product line differentiation, the base instrument cluster evolved into a hybrid unit. Its feature content includes: electronic speedometer module and balance of instrument cluster.
