One of the most difficult features of traction motor application is the mounting of the motor in the bogie frame and the maintenance of the correct coupling between the armature shaft and the roadwheel axle assuring that the efficiency and the smooth performance of the transmission between them are fully maintained under all conditions of operation. The axle - suspended traction motor and a simple gear transmission is used in the majority of applications of d.c.-motors. Its greatest advantage is that the motor can be accommodated within the smallest possible space, allowing for the minimum possible distance between the axle and armature shaft. This distance, usually termed the gear - centre distance plays a very important part in the design of the motor as concerned with the following design features of vehicles: the permissible maximum gear ratio, the minimum possible roadwheel diameter, the maximum diameter of the axle at the suspension bearings.
