The quad redundant Flight Control System Electronics (FCSE) for the F/A-18 is built by the General Electric Company, Aerospace Control Systems Deparmtnet (ACSD), Binghamtpn, New York. Analysis of the Flight Control Computer (FCC), the heart of the FCSE, emphasized the results of an effort set forth by General Electric in the early stages of design, sometimes referred to as 'reliability by design' or, to coin a Navy philosophy, the 'New Look' reliability. Successful operational reliability is measured by the accuracy of its field reliability to predicted reliability, and its ability to meet the equipment specification Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF), a reciprocal of the failure rate. Inmeasuring the success of the F/A-18 FCC, GE has found some variances in MIL-HDBK-217C (Ref. 3) predictions and some sources of error in data classification. This paper describes those variances, the component types that were analyzed, and the comparison of field to predicted failure rates and MTBF's of the F/A-18 FCC. A discussion of how we incorporated our findings to allow greater flexibility for future predictions is also included.
