An analytic model to predict individual rail car energy consumption on a site- and service-specific basis is presented. The model relies on a one-time data reduction preprocessor of detailed track profiles and car characteristics so that site and service specificity is retained, while permitting a simple hand-calculator prediction for any origin/destination/car-type combination for which data has been reduced. The method permits the separation of total energy consumption into the following components: wheel/rail contact, bearings, car dynamics, track depression, aerodynamic drag, speed changes, elevation changes, and curvature. In addition, estimates are made for energy losses due to temporary slow orders and train interference delays. The model is a useful tool in general energy sensitivity analysis and is considered to be superior to simulation models in costing applications for specific commodity shipments. A number of applications of the model are presented and comparisons are made with the predictions of a detailed train simulation model for the same situation.
