The U.S. materials and structures research and development community is now being confronted with probably the most demanding challenge we have ever faced. That is what will required of us to support the President's strategic defense initiative (SDI). It is fortunate that at this point in time, we have well over 30 years of composites research and development experience behind us because as I see it now the SDI will need to use every bit of that composite experience if SDI is to be successful. However, before going any further let me give you a brief outline of just what SDI is all about. It should also be emphasized at the outset that the information I will discuss is the result of an intensive effort of many dedicated government and national laboratory and private industry engineers and scientists.
