The U.S. Navy is increasing its use of photovoltaic power systems, particularly in remote areas for stand-alone applications. These systems operate unattended and include little or no instrumentation for data acquisition. Although these systems have operated reliably, a program has been initiated to provide preventive maintenance and to determine if any system problems have occurred. This long-term program calls for periodic site visits for a few days of intensive data collection and maintenance action. Data will be analyzed, normalized, and compared with data collected in succeeding years. The results will be beneficial to the system operator in terms of decreased life cycle cost.
