The techniques adopted to validate to safety standards the software for a railway signalling system are described. The validation is intended to prove the correct behaviour of the system for all combinations of input information, and consequently semantic aspects of the software are emphasised. The effectiveness of the combination of methods used is reviewed, and the degree of confidence obtainable is assessed by comparison with established techniques for checking relay-based safety systems.
