For dc dynamic braking a consistent theory is developed based on quasi-one-dimensional model. Expressions for conventional , exit and entry end effect force densities, air-gap flux density, secondary current density and end path current are developed. It is found that entry end effect force is negligible compared to exit end effect force. The influence of exit end effect is predominant at low speeds rather than at high speeds. For large LIMs end effect force is small and it can be neglected. A simplified model is also deduced and the performance based on it, is compared with that of basic model. A circle diagram formulated here gives an indication of the performance as a first step towards adequate design procedure. The performance characteristics predicted for force is compared with test values obtained from an experimental machine and found close agreement between them.
