This paper examines the performance of DC electric rail guns using plasma-armature-acceleratred projectiles. The adverse effects on performance of a black residue produced in the rail gun are examined. The residue appears to be responsible for causing secondary current paths within the rail gun. The secondary current paths result in muzzle velocities lower than predicted.
