This paper attempts to specify the type(s) of battery that the space agencies and satellite users will need in 5 to 10 years time. It will include an assessment of which of the advanced batteries being developed appear to give some hope of meeting the desired performance goals and of replacing the current nickel-cadmium and silver-cadmium batteries. For low earth orbit use the battery needs to give a high cycle life (12000 to 24000 cycles) over a real life of between 2 and 4 years. The useful energy density needs to be higher than is currently available with nickel-cadmium cells which can only give long lives at low depths of discharge. At 50 Wh kg-1 however, it is not excessively high and the nickel-hydrogen and silver-hydrogen cells that are currently being developed specifically for space use do give high promise. For geosynchronous applications it has been shown that a battery of high energy density (100 Wh kg-1 to 150 Wh kg-1) is needed but other requirements are relaxed. There are only about 45 discharge cycles per 6 months and the cells are only likely to reach maximum discharge for a few times during the 7 to 10 year life of the satellite. No currently developed battery system is capable of meeting this requirement. Sodium-sulphur and lithium-iron sulphide batteries offer some promise.
