Future satellites and spacecraft, e.g., Galileo, with spun and despun sections may derive significant benefits from the use of rotary transformers for the transfer of signals and power across a rotating interface in lieu of slip-rings and flexures. This is particularly true of spacecraft that have to demonstrate a life expectancy of over 5 years. The desirable characteristics of the rotary transformer are high reliability and low noise, which qualify it as potential replacement for slip rings. A rotary transformer is essentially the same as a conventional transformer except that the geometry is arranged so that the primary and secondary can be rotated with respect to each other. Because the signal or power transfer is accomplished electromagnetically across an air gap, there are no wearing contacts, noise, or contamination, and thus long life can be expected from a rotary transformer. This paper describes the development and test results of rotary signal transformers to be used in the Galileo spacecraft system.
