Seventy-one Silent Karrier battery powered vehicles are currently in operation in urban areas working alongside petrol and diesel vehicles. Most are occupied on parcel delivery activities but a few are in the form of small 20-seat buses. Actual operating cost data is therefore available. The paper will describe this activity and will use the data and projected cost improvements associated with on-going developments in the drive train technology to create lifetime cost comparisons between the diesel and battery vehicles manufactured both in 1980 and 1986. A conservative view of escalating diesel costs compared with electricity is embodied in calculations which will be presented as annual revenue graphs, and as discounted cash flows. The data shows that whilst there is a small cost penalty in buying the vehicle in 1980 and operating it for an eight-year life compared with the same life for the diesel vehicle, by 1986 there will be a cost saving by operating the battery vehicle.
