With the ever increasing demand for system reliability the trend in submarine calbe installations around the world is to provide more physical protection for the cable, and therefore new plowing techniques are continuously being developed and improved. For example, telephone companies operating trans-ocean submarine cables are in the process of plowing in water depths up to 200 meters on the continental shelf of N. America and in waters around Japan. These requirements have led to the development in Europe and Japan of underwater vehicles such as tractors.
