The software for real time control and communication occuring in areospace vehicles is stored in Read Only Memories (ROMs) as part of onboard computing systems. The usual structure-based reliability analysis of such systems considers memory cell failures irrespective of whether they affect the system success or not. In practice, because of the sequential nature of the real time software, if a memory cell fails after it has been used, its subsequent failure will not affect system success. An analytic method for computer-system reliability in which the underlying criteria for success are based on the computations the system must perform was recently developed by Meyer. Such computation-based methods are also needed for evaluating reliability parameters such as coverage. In this paper this approach is used to develop expressions for reliability, mean time to failure (MTTF) and failure rate for a ROM containing real time software.
