With a view to modernizing its freight service, the Japanese National Railways is pushing ahead with construction of highly automated freight terminals to integrate transportation in standardized containers. The container handling system at such a terminal is described, with emphasis placed on the operation of the automatic container crane. All operations of the crane including location and chucking of containers, and travel to the desired spot are automatically controlled by computer command. Newly developed techniques are incorporated in the crane regarding its construction, control, and detection mechanism.
