This article outlines various methods and their limitations establishing accurate positional fixes of moving ships or aircrafts, and describes a modulation phase comparison instrument operating in "S" band frequency range, providing continuous range readings accurate to within 1,5 meters at a range of up to 250 km. Its carrier is tunable from 2,8 to 3,3 GHz. Its method of modulating the microwave carrier with a series of frequencies ("pattern frequencies") provide a resolution in range measurement of 0,1 meters. Pattern frequency modulation is applied to both, ship-based and shore-based instruments. Output can be printers or other recorders.
