The results of the magneplane project carried out by a joint MIT-Raytheon-United Engineers team are summarized. These include preliminary design of a full-scale system with analysis of guideway and power distribution costs, vehicle requirements, and vehicle dynamics. The theoretical results were tested practically by building a fully operational 1/25 scale model system using both samarium-cobalt and superconducting magnet vehicles with on-board control telemetering systems, operating on a 116 m long actively synchronized guideway. The construction and testing of this scale model is also described.
