An electronic method for detecting an earth fault on a fully insulated battery system that fails to safety in the event ofs upply, component or connection failure, is described. The particular application to battery-driven coal-mine locomotives is discussed, and a device recently built and tested by the authors for this purpose is described in detail. The device is such that intrinsic safety for methane-air mixtures may be achieved.
