The setting of limits on the degree of noise generated by PSVs and other heavy transport is a comparatively recent development, but public opinion and other pressures have created a climate of change, as a result of which, the views of the noise suppression lobby are being heeded. Indeed, the research of acoustic and other environmental experts, into socially tolerable noise limits has already resulted in legislation. But the permitted sound levels have been realistically correlated to the potential of existing technology, and so hitherto have not unduly affected the work of the vehicle designer. His work in the future is likely to be affected by sound legislation to an encreasing extent. Indeed progress has been such that the formulation of new regulations, which should result in a quieter vehicle, are already being considered and sould become law soon.
