This paper presents a rapid resistance estimation method (RREM) for trimarans in early design stages. The method considers the total resistance as the combination of the viscous and wave-making resistance. The viscous resistance is the product of the form factor (1+k) and the frictional resistance calculated by ITTC-1957 equation. The wave-making resistance is calculated based on Michell’s Integral method proposed by Yeung et al. [2004. The implementation of the method is modified for general (non-Wrigley) hull forms. Results are compared with towing tank test data and the CFD simulations and indicate that RREM can provide acceptable resistance estimation, for Froude numbers higher than 0.4 with low computational cost. RREM provides a choice for the resistance estimation of high-speed trimarans and integration in design optimisation, where computational costs are at times prohibitive.
