For the simulation of the roll motion of ships with boundary element methods, the total roll damping must be known. Usually the total roll damping of ships is determined by experiments. In addition to the well-known roll decay experiments, the roll damping can be estimated by the harmonic excited roll motion technique, which was introduced by P. Blume in 1979 at the Hamburg Ship Model Basin. Compared to the roll decay technique, the advantage of the harmonic excited roll motion technique is the accurate estimation of damping coefficients especially for large roll amplitudes with and without forward speed. Disadvantages of the technique are a long measurement time and the consideration of only a linear restoring roll moment. Furthermore, Blume’s analysis method is only valid for the roll resonance frequency. This paper presents improvements of the harmonic excited roll motion technique, focusing mainly on a significant reduction of the measuring time, an accurate estimation of roll damping coefficients over a wide frequency range and the possibility of roll damping determination for ships with a nonlinear stability moment curve. The improvements presented do not require any modifications to the experimental setup.
