This paper presents the methodology used in the definition of the fare system for the then proposed subway for Rio de Janeiro. Some of the characteristics of Rio and its transportation system are presented to help the reader who is not familiar with the area to understand what was sought with the new system. A comparison between what was planned and what was actually implemented is made. A discussion about the reasons that prevented the full system from being implemented indicates the relevance of political implications over merely technical aspects in transport projects like the Metro of Rio.
