Prediction of the real performance of Building Base Isolation (BBI) systems to control ground borne vibration has been the subject of several research programs in recent years. Comparing the vibration level in the superstructure in an isolated setup with that obtained in a non-isolated setup, the performance of the BBI system can be directly calculated. However, in practice, a non-isolated building does not exist.

    Recently, in the frame of the EUROSTAR BIOVIB project (Building Insulation against Outdoor Vibrations), based on Power Flow Insertion Gain (PFIG), a simplified performance indicator has been introduced. The new indicator is defined in terms of the measured transmissibility in the isolated building and the mobilities of the superstructure and substructure .

    To validate the proposed performance indicator, a full-scale test bench has been developed. The test bench has three main parts: (1) a substructure (foundation), (2) an isolation bearing and (3) a superstructure. The superstructure consists of a concrete column and four steel blocks being hung from the column by four springs representing the effect of floor resonance frequencies. The substructure (foundation) is a thick steel plate supported by four thin pads.

    The performance of a selected BBI system has been determined by the proposed indicator and then compared with that measured by the direct insertion loss in the test bench. The proposed indicator shows a reasonable agreement with the direct insertion gain up 100 Hz in the frequency range of ground borne vibration due to railway induced vibrations.
