Rendezvous sensors have been widely used in the frame of Human exploration, mainly for docking purpose. LIDAR and Visible or Infrared camera sensors are generally used to perform medium and short-range navigation as well as docking or berthing. As such, Sodern was the provider of the primary rendezvous sensor for the five ATV cargos. Besides these needs for ISS resupply and Human transportation, there are emerging demands for robotic applications such as inorbit servicing (satellite life extension, satellite refueling, payload exchange, onorbit assembly), active debris removal and sample returns.

Sodern is currently developing a new vision-based rendezvous sensor to address these missions. Based on passive sensing in the visible and infrared bands, ARAMIS which stands for Approach and Rendezvous Autonomous Multimission Integrated Sensor is being designed to support all phases of a rendezvous with cooperative and uncooperative targets, from far to close range and proximity operations. The basic architecture of the smart sensor is that of optical heads connected to a high-performance electronic unit running advanced algorithms allowing the delivery of a target’s Line of Sight (LoS) in far range, and relative position and attitude – 6 Degree of Freedom (DoF) pose – in close range using the 3D model of the target.

ARAMIS 6 DoF solution has been worked out and tested against several mission scenarios using simulated and real data: active removal of ENVISAT debris satellite using numerical simulations, ISS rendezvous and docking using real space images acquired during last ATV flight (so called LIRIS-1 experiment with ESA and Airbus), rendezvous with a GEO communication satellite using a scale mock-up in the lab, and on-orbit servicing in LEO simulated on a robotic test bench in the frame of EROSS H2020 project coordinated by Thales Alenia Space. Main results are presented along with the proposed product based on space visible cameras and processing unit currently in development.
