The topic of flight in moving from the Earth’s lower atmosphere into space is introduced. Example flight missions utilizing chemical rocket propulsion for suborbital and orbital flight applications are discussed. Multistaging of the rocket vehicle’s propulsion system as a means for going further with the same amount of propellant is introduced. Background material on the internal flow and combustion in chemical rockets is provided, in preparation for more detailed coverage of specific chemical systems in later chapters. Performance equations associated with the generation of thrust by a propulsive exhaust nozzle are presented.
