Landing site selection activities got underway in earnest after the issuing of the Announcement of Opportunity for the Mars 2020 Investigation and the Science Definition Team’s report in July 2013, followed by the definition of the mission initial engineering constraints and the first call for candidate landing sites. This invitation in late 2013 sought to get a jump start on the imaging of locations of high science interest using Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) instruments to facilitate robust assessments and mature discussions of the potential merits and shortcomings for the broadest possible set of sites (relative to both engineering and science constraints) at the first workshop. At this time there was an existing database of 55 candidate landing sites.
