The aim of this study is to provide a detailed analysis of causes of road traffic low safety level on two-lane roundabouts, on the example of “Ofiar Katastrofy Smoleńskiej” roundabout situated in Olsztyn and an analysis of the most convenient alteration of the roundabout in order to improve its safety. The authors’ own original method was used to analyze the choice possibilities of the roundabout rebuilding concept, which provides a multi-criteria assessment of comparable design solutions. This method takes into account four basic criteria: road traffic safety, traffic capacity, drivers’ time loss and economic factors involved in the process of rebuilding, with an assumption of priority of the road traffic safety criterion. 6 rebuilding design variants were considered, whereas four of them offered designs of a turbo roundabout, and two 2 were crossroads with a central island and traffic light. Studies show that in terms of the accepted criteria the most beneficial were solutions based on the turbo roundabout scheme.
