As temperatures in Gemini 5 continued to make life uncomfortable for the astronauts, the constant tumbling as they drifted to conserve power so that the fuel cells could support the full mission duration was another challenge to endure. Mission highlights reported in the media included surpassing the 70-hour durations of Vostok 6 in 1963 and Vostok 4 a year earlier. Highlights of the day aboard Gemini 5 included observations of Earth with its ever-changing weather patterns, and recommendations for improvements to be made prior to flying the 14-day Gemini 7 mission at the end of the year. The daily housekeeping and stowage situation was developing into a bit of a juggling act. Experiments conducted included evaluations of the crews’ ability to spot targets or objects from orbit, a not unrelated subject to the USAF’s MOL program. By the end of this day, Cooper had also surpassed cosmonaut Valeri Bykovsky’s spaceflight career total of over 119 hours.
