In this chapter, we will focus on the SpaceFibre Network layer. In particular, we will try to reproduce the approach that a system engineer would have in the design of a complex SpaceFibre network, providing the necessary tools and references. The first step consists of performing a high-level simulation of the network to verify if it has been designed correctly; this can be done thanks to the proposed network simulator SHINe. Then, we will introduce a representative SpaceFibre network with the building blocks presented in Chap. 3. Finally, we will propose a functional and performance test plan that can be applied to a generic network, using the hereabove mentioned network as an example; finally, the performance results and functional analysis are carried out. The results can be of particular interest to engineers approaching the SpaceFibre world, providing a background to understand the timing performance of a SpaceFibre network and the achievable performance of the protocol within a network in terms of timing.
