Abstract Broadcast transmissions in inter-vehicle communications are usually confronted with fundamental challenges that greatly degrade the network performance. To this end, we firstly design a novel metric for selecting a proper relaying node to forward the emergency message. Based on the derived metric, we propose a cross-layer approach to efficiently broadcast emergency messages in the desired propagation direction. We analyze the network performance in terms of the packet error rate of the emergency message, relay selection delay, and emergency message access delay.
