Energy efficiency of seaport terminals and sustainable energy management has a great impact on the port performance and corporate social responsibility. Various types of cargo handling equipment and vehicles powered by diesel, natural gas, other fossil fuels, and electrical energy are operated in seaports. Port operations continue perpetually, and so the energy efficiency of port equipment directly impacts the resource management, port environment, as well as operational costs. Nowadays, concepts of port sustainability, green port, electric-powered equipment, and autonomous, automated, and unmanned ports are frequently encountered in the literature. Latest legal regulations in the maritime industry intensively cover energy efficiency and emission issues. Within the scope of this study, the energy efficiency and sustainability-related agenda of seaport terminals have been examined through the relevant literature and seaport publications. This chapter is aimed to present a comprehensive framework of the energy management and sustainability issues in ports. Findings are expected to be beneficial and encouraging in practice for the stakeholders and decision-makers of general cargo, dry bulk, and liquid bulk terminals.
