Abstract Our study of the economics of shipping practice and management would not be complete without an evaluation of computerization. In years to come the increasing use of computers in the shipping industry will contribute to greater efficiency and profitability by facilitating the optimum use of available resources. This includes not only all the technical, operational and commercial aspects of ship management, but also the other directly related areas of port management and the processing of international consignments. The latter are dealt with in my books Elements of Port Operation and Management and Elements of Export Practice, respectively. Overall one can say that in the next decade the shipping industry and its infrastructure will become more integrated, with computerization in all areas of its business activity.
